Simple answer is YES. I’ve heard every excuse, “My taxes will be crazy” or “The city just wants my money.” The tax argument is silly. I’ve seen the tax difference on a recent project costing $60,000 and it was a drop in the bucket, a few dollars a month added to the property tax.
Bottom line is this. If you as a homeowner get caught doing work without a permit, you will face fines and have to hire licensed contractors to complete the remaining work or in most cases fix what is already done. Plus if the work you did causes a fire or flooding, the insurance companies WILL NOT cover the damages. As a contractor, we risk losing our license and crazy fines.
Just a word of caution, if an inspector sees a dumpster on your property and no posted permit, chances are he will be knocking on your door.
